Civic Organizations

There are several civic organizations that children and adults living in or near Breda can get involved in.

Fred F. & Norman J. Bruning American Legion Post #607

The Fred F. & Norman J. Bruning American Legion Post #607 (hereafter referred to as the Breda Legion) was established in Breda in 1922. The post is part of the American Legion which was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.

The Breda Legion currently has more than 100 members who live in or nearby Breda. Additionally, the Breda Legion has two affiliate groups, the Auxiliary and the Sons of the Legion, that are also comprised of volunteers who promote service and fundraise to support local goals of the organization. Some of the Breda Legion's current goals are:

  • to generate funds to upkeep and renovate the building as a service not only to members but the community at large
  • provide funding for local youth to attend Boys State
  • cover costly uniform expenses for local honor guard and color guard formations
  • and contribute donations to local programs in Breda (such as little league or the fire department)

The Breda Legion hosts an annual old-fashioned, family-fun Independence Day celebration in Breda's Memorial Park. The almost 100-year-old event draws hundreds of people to Breda yearly and provides the Legion with its largest fundraiser of the year.

The organization purchased the building at 208 Main Street in Breda in 1950 and has operated from that location ever since. The Breda Legion building celebrated its 100th birthday in 2015. While the legion volunteers have worked hard to recently expand the building, they are currently accepting donations to renovate the bar area of the former main entrance in the original building.
